Opaque Collective presents two exhibitions: Steel Wheels in the gallery space and United Freights of America in the shop space. Together, they trace the living histories of more than 350 graffiti writers and the vehicle that connects them: the freight train. Both exhibitions will open Friday, August 28, 2026 from 6–9 p.m. at Opaque Collective, 7401 S. Broadway, St. Louis, MO 63111 and will be on view through September 20, 2026.
What began on the subway lines of New York did not end there. As anti-graffiti initiatives threatened to bring the era of painted subway cars to a close in the late 1980s, writers looked elsewhere. Freight trains offered an unprecedented opportunity: mobility and reach. With lines stretching from coast-to-coast, it became possible for writers to transcend the limits of a single city. As these names, styles, and stories began crossing states, graffiti morphed from a localized phenomenon into a national cultural exchange: "All-city" became "All-country."
Situated at the crossroads of major rail lines and waterways, St. Louis is one of the most important transportation hubs in the United States. As trains pass through the city laden with coal, cargo, and carcasses, the lines also transport the regional styles, colors, complexities, and crews of the freight writers who paint them, giving observers the rare opportunity to experience the full spectrum of the American Freight Movement.
Steel Wheels presents a selection of works from a traveling exhibition of the same name. The collection centers freight trains and their writers, and incorporates pieces from an international array of artists compiled in full by MadClout. Organized by some of the most respected OG’s of the culture and curated specifically for Opaque by Baser and Lunch, Steel Wheels represents both the historical subjectivity and aesthetic evolution that emerged on the rails as graf took to the trains, and the national transmission sparked a stylistic revolution.
United Freights of America showcases the meticulous archive of The Sandman, a bencher (train observer) and historian, whose twenty-year commitment to documenting freight graffiti has resulted in a remarkable collection of more than 250 hand-painted HO-scale freight cars created by over 350 writers from across the Americas. Every car features original works painted by the artist, or sometimes many artists, whose names span over thirty feet of track. Each model line is surrounded by hand-built environments, designed to mirror the experience of watching a freight train from the vantage point of a real bench. What emerges is both an archive and a living document, offering a snapshot of an ephemeral culture in constant motion.
Taken together, Steel Wheels and United Freights of America examine freight writing as a vehicle of transmission, carrying the culture across the continent. From rail yards and industrial corridors to the sprawling infrastructure that supports them, the exhibitions aim to include the context of the environments surrounding the work, and represent two distinct approaches to preserving and cataloging the cultural, artistic, and literal movement of Freight Train Graffiti. They tell the story of how an art form rooted in place found its way across the country, and how all rails lead to St. Louis.
